This Nanny Donated Part Of Her Liver To Save Toddler She Babysits
A 22-year-old New Jersey college student has been deemed a hero for selflessly donating part of her liver in order to help save the life of the toddler she babysits.
Kiersten Miles of Wall, NJ, is being applauded around the world for helping save toddler Natalia Rosko, who was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia. Biliary Atresia is a rare condition which makes the liver unable to drain the bile to the intestines.
If the condition is left untreated, the condition would result to acute liver failure and ultimately death.
Miles, who underwent the surgery to extract part of her organ in January, said the procedure was no big deal if it meant saving the life of Rosko whom she started taking care of last year in June – just three weeks when she volunteered for the donation.
“She was 9 months old when I started watching her. She’s so helpless. She can’t tell anyone what’s wrong with her. She can’t spread the word and ask for help,” Miles said to NY Daily News “Especially for a baby who can’t really ask for help, it didn’t seem like that much of a sacrifice, because I’d be saving a life.”
The toddlers mother Farra Rosko said that her daughter’s condition has greatly improved since the transplant.
“If you saw her today you would never know she had a transplant,” she said.
Mrs. Rosko only spoke kind words about Miles.
She said “She is a true angel on earth. What a selfless human being at 22 years old,”
The sefless nanny said she hopes to inspire others to do the same for people in need.
“I am getting a lot more attention from this than I ever expected. But I think it’s really important to spread the word about living donations and organ donation in general,” she said.
