How a Simple Conversation Can Help a Lost Child Be Found

“A few weeks ago my husband and I drove our two children, ages 2 and 1, to Florida. We stopped overnight at my dad’s house with plans to drive to Disney the next day.

The next morning as my husband, father and myself loaded the car, my girls were inside playing with their uncles–at least that’s what I thought until a gold truck pulled into the driveway.

A woman rolled down her window and asked us if we were missing a little girl or knew who the girl was in the backseat.

My heart dropped to the pit of my stomach as the lady rolled down the window to reveal my precious 2 year old daughter.

How in the world she made it past 5 adults was beyond me but yet there she was in the backseat of a strangers car.

I thanked the woman profusely and we talked for a bit. While we were discussing the situation, she shared with me how my two year old was able to give her an idea about where she was supposed to be and I think it’s something all parents need to hear!

When I take my children to new places I describe to them what they are seeing and why we are there. Because of this, my daughter was able to tell this woman she was staying at a yellow house (not an apartment) with grass in the yard.

My daughter also told the woman “my mom is Mrs. Montoya,” and that her grandpa was taking her to Disney.

Sure enough this woman found my dad’s yellow house with us all out front packing the car for our trip.

Until that day, I never considered how a simple conversation about our surroundings might save one of my children’s lives and you can bet that I’ll keep doing it until the day she’s old enough to vote.”
