Dogs Bark At Bush Near Playing Kids—When Grandma Sees Why, Grabs Kids And Runs

Anyone that has a dog will know how incredibly intuitive, loyal and protective they can be. Melissa Butt can vouch that after her two dogs alerted her to the dangers lurking in her grass.

Butt’s grandchildren were playing in her backyard in Brandon, Florida when suddenly her two pit bulls started to bark frantically.

Zayden and Mallory aged 4 and 1 were happily unaware that of the potential threat lurking in the bushes until the dogs raised the alarm.

Butt spoke to Fox 13 and said “They were just standing there barking,” in relation to her two faithful pit bulls who she is now calling “protectors”. The dogs had spotted a copperhead snake in the grass and their instinct was to protect the toddlers.

As soon as she realized what was happening, Melissa grabbed the children and took them inside away from the danger. Luckily the children escaped unscathed, however, Slayer and Paco the pit bulls were both bitten by the venomous snake.

Melissa recalls how the snake lashed out to attack the dogs and bit them before Slayer “grabbed the snake in his mouth and killed it,” Butt told TODAY.

Paco was bitten in the leg, a relatively minor injury, however, Slayer sustained deep wounds on his face and snout. Butt rushed the dogs to the Blue Pearl Veterinary Hospital where they were treated with anti-venom immediately.

Speaking to WFLA, Dr. Shelby Loos of the Blue Pearl Vets explained, “We need to get the anti-venom…quickly, in order for them to get a good prognosis. It is very, very painful. We give them medicine for pain and make them as comfortable as possible. But, we have to act fast.”

Speaking about Slayer’s injuries, Melissa told how “His entire right side of his face was swollen. He had a little sack of fluid that dropped from his chin.” Slayer needed some time to recover in the hospital while Paco went home after one night. Thankfully, Slayer recovered and was reunited with his loving family.

After the incident, Zayden told his grandmother “Slayer protects me. Slayer protects us.”

If it wasn’t for the quick thinking of the two dogs the situation could have been a whole lot worse, and Melissa is well aware of that and thankful to her two canine friends.

Taking to Facebook, Butt wrote, “We feel blessed that the dogs took the “bite” for the family instead of one of the kids. There’s nothing I can say or do to show how grateful I am.”

“They are my boys, my protectors,” Melissa told News Channel 8.
