Knowledge and awareness on this topic is so important. We know accidents aren’t always avoidable as you cannot control every other road user, however you can always offer your child the best chance of survival.
This video from Britax shows the difference between a high back child seat and a basic booster seat in an accident. Britax is urging parents to “Bin the Booster” this summer.
Highback Booster Vs Booster Seat
A high back booster holds the child’s body upright, rather than slipping down the seatbelt. This is especially important on long journeys when a child falls asleep, when you’re likely to be going at high speeds on a motorway. A high back booster provides head and side protection.

I am having a hard time seeing the difference between booster seats, maybe because I’m on a phone. Can someone describe exactly what’s happening?

The high back booster protects the child. The back-less booster allows the child to be thrown around more with arms coming out from under the seat belt and body bent at an alarming angle. The difference is dramatic.

The one in light blue body is thrown completely around and looks as if it is seriously injured where the other isn’t thrown around to much because it has a back on the booster seat, it’s pretty much saying just the seat part isn’t safe and you should have a booster seat with a back for more protection.

We tried a booster for a few weeks and went back to the high back seat after swing how easily our daughter could slip out. And it’s just not as safe. I would probably rather be in a seat like the ones kids are in. 🙂 we should have adult ones.

On most booster seats I have seen there is a safety strap that connects the seat and seat belt, which doesn’t appear to be connected in this video. Much like any car seat, if it’s not being used correctly it loses its efficacy!

The one i saw only goes to 65 pounds unless u go to a booster.

I feel that this should have been labelled “…BACKLESS Booster Seats are not safe”, as opposed to just “…booster seats…”
I refer to both types as “booster seats”, and it took me far too long to realize what this video was trying to point out.

They are pointing out the booster seat with the back is far safer than the one without!! But its the side impact events that really separate them…. At the end of the day there are also guidelines about when kids should be out of boosters altogether… knees bent over the edge of the seat etc… apparently most kids dont pass until they are 10-12 years old!! Its the difference between life and death at high speed!!

Makes sense that this would happen since there is nothing from preventing them from twisting sideways & slamming into the door or window without a 5 point harness.
