A 7-year-old boy is being called a hero after he rescued a drowning toddler from his neighborhood pool.

Cesar Galeana tells local media that he was walking to his cousin’s house to play video games when he heard a “splash.” He then peered through the fence surrounding the pool area at his apartment complex and saw a toddler in the water. “I was worried,” Galeana said, “because I … thought he was going to die. So I ran and saved him.”

The 7-year-old jolted through the main office lobby to get to the pool area.

He then jumped in to pull the 2-year-old to safety.

“I feel like I was holding a rock,” Cesar said.

After getting the toddler out of the water, Cesar realized there weren’t any adults around. He took off looking for help.

“I’m like, ‘What should I do? What should I do?” Cesar said. “I ran, got the gate open, got him out, put him on the ground and told the office it was a drowning.”

The toddler was then transported to the hospital. The toddler’s parents told police they were taking groceries from the car into the apartment and didn’t realize the boy had wandered off.

Surveillance video shows the 2-year-old was wandering by himself for nearly 10 minutes before falling into the pool.

The toddler is expected to make a full recovery. The apartment complex used zip ties to close the small gap in the gate they believe the toddler squeezed through to get into the pool area.

He should be commended and the complex should be fined for not having a security gate.
