The Bolton Coroner is warning parents about sleeping with their babies after drinking alcohol, after an infant boy was found dead in his Mother’s bed.

The Mother, Amy Leigh Howell, admitted that she had been drinking at home with her boyfriend Blessing Mayo in Bolton, Manchester. During bedtime, she put her two-year-old boy Teneil between them two at 11 p.m. The next time Miss Howell checked her son she found him out cold on December 30 last year. The coroner concluded that Teneil was accidentally smothered by their bodies while sleeping.

‘I hope the tragedy acts as a warning to other parents not to sleep while drunk with their babies in bed.’ – Bolton coroner Susan Duncan said. ‘This is clearly a tragic loss of a very young life and I’m mindful of the suffering of the family.’

‘However, Teneil’s death highlights the risks associated with infants co-sleeping with an adult, particularly where the adult has a reduced awareness.’

‘I hope the publicity touching this tragic death will alert parents to the impact of not sleeping with an infant.’

‘Despite warnings of the risks of the overlay, the evidence has shown that Teneil was found in the middle of his mother’s bed between her and her partner.

“They confirmed to have been checking on the infant ‘every 10 to 15 minutes’. The next thing she remembered was being woken up by her boyfriend shouting that the baby was not breathing. She called an ambulance immediately.

Both Miss Howell and Mr. Mayo said they did not recall how the baby had been smothered.

Teneil was sent to the Royal Bolton Hospital on December 30 but was pronounced dead right after.
