Woman’s boyfriend beats toddler son into vegetative state; ‘Mom’ covers baby’s bruises with makeu

A Palmdale, California, couple was sentenced to life in prison Monday for the beating death of the woman’s toddler son.

A judge sentenced Brandon Jerel Williams, 27, to 25 years to life after being convicted of first-degree murder, torture, and assault on a child causing death. The victim’s mother, Rosie Lee Wilson, 23, was sentenced to 15 years to life on a second-degree murder charge, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Their sentencing comes three years after the fatal beating of Anthony Wilson. KABC reported that Williams bashed the 23-month-old in the head five times on August 21, 2014. The child died from his injuries on October 5, 2014.

According to theavtimes.com:

A Palmdale woman was sentenced Monday to 15 years to life in prison, and her live-in boyfriend to 25 years to life, for the killing of her 23-month-old son three years ago, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Rosie Lee Wilson, 23, was found guilty of second-degree murder and child abuse in the 2014 death of her son Anthony, and Brandon Jerel Williams, 27, was convicted of first-degree murder, torture and assault.

Williams moved in with Wilson in May 2014 and would frequently hit and scream at the toddler, according to evidence presented at trial.

Victim Anthony Lee Wilson remained hospitalized in a vegetative state for 41 days before he died on Oct. 5, 2014. [
In July 2014, Wilson left the toddler with Williams while she went to a karaoke bar. Williams beat the toddler, and Wilson returned to find her son limping with several injuries but failed to seek medical care or report what happened, according to prosecutors.
In August 2014, when Wilson was away again at a karaoke bar, Williams beat the boy in an attack witnessed by the boy’s 3 1/2-year-old sister, the prosecutors said.

Though the boy had massive bruising all over, including his head and groin, the couple waited until the next afternoon to take him to a hospital, where they claimed that he had been injured in a fall, according to prosecutors.

A nurse testified that the boy had caked-on makeup and baby powder all over him in an attempt to hide his injuries.

Two doctors testified that the boy would have had a good chance of surviving if he had been taken to the hospital right away, according to prosecutors. Instead, he remained hospitalized in a vegetative state for 41 days before he died on Oct. 5, 2014.

Deputy District Attorneys Jon Hatami and Scott Yang prosecuted the case. The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The unthinkable abuse occurred while Rosie left Anthony with her boyfriend. However, prosecutors said she used makeup to conceal “massive” bruising on her son’s body, including on his head and groin. She also didn’t take him to the hospital until the following afternoon, they also alleged.

The child was hospitalized in a vegetative state for the weeks leading up to his death. Coroner reports determined that Anthony sustained broken arms and ribs in addition to other serious injuries.

Months before the fatal beating, the woman’s boyfriend had struck the child in the head several times and screamed at him.

Authorities said Rosie never sought medical attention for Anthony. The mother of two once found her son limping after Williams watched him. Despite this, she allowed her boyfriend to continue babysitting the toddler, according to KTLA.
