A family is heartbroken after a toddler died when he was tragically hit by a reversing car driven by his father.

The boy, who is believed to be 18-months-old, was playing in the yard of the family’s Waubra property when the tragedy unfolded.

Police frantically attempted to contact the mother of the child, who was on her way back from a trip to Queensland. The Mother was informed of the tragedy late on Monday afternoon.

Ballarat Sergeant Rick Nield said that the boy and his father, aged in his 30s, were together in the backyard when the toddler went into the shed.

His father, who remained outside, began reversing his car when the boy wandered outside.

Sergeant Nield said it seemed that the toddler had wandered out of the shed moments before he was hit.

The dad was in the yard with his young fella today. The dad was in his car and it appears the young bloke was in the shed,” Sergeant Nield said.

“He [has] wandered out of the shed and been struck. It’s a tragic accident. It’s tough on everyone, the family and emergency services.”
