As a Mother of two little kids, I often fantasize about what it would be like to be able to run errands all by myself.

A shopping trip without dragging them all out? Or a school pick-up that didn’t involve buckling a million car seats?

A short trip that would actually be a quick one and not a long, drawn-out affair?

It’s a pleasant thought at this point in my life!

Susan Terrillion, a 55-year-old Mom was reportedly out vacationing with her kids, who are 8 and 9 years old, in Delaware when she decided that takeout would be a great choice for dinner.

Let’s face the truth, “vacation” isn’t always a vacation for moms when we are still the ones planning, cooking, cleaning, as well as organizing everything no matter where we are, right?

In this case, Terrillion ran out for food and somewhere along the line, she had decided to leave her eight-year-old daughter and nine-year-old son at home while she did so. The reports do not specify exactly why she made that call, but we can only imagine.

The kids were possibly whining, that they didn’t want to go, or maybe she was just exhausted, maybe she just needed a break, but whatever the reason, she left them in their vacation rental while she went five miles down the road to get food.

While the Mother was gone, five miles down the road, apparently the kids’ dog ran out in the road, where a neighbor stopped to help the kids get the dog under control.

The neighbour who ended up talking to the kids and found out they were home alone.

Realizing that the children were home alone, the neighbor took it upon himself to call the police and that’s when Terrillion was arrested and charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of her children.

I can really only imagine how awful it would have been to come home with the takeout, looking forward to a nice, relaxing night off from cooking, only to get arrested in front of your children.

But at the same time, I can be sure that I am way too paranoid of a Mom to leave my kids alone at that age.

But none the less, Terrillion was later released on a $500 bail, which is quite a small price to pay.

This is probably one of those grey areas of parenting, as you can see how dangerous this situation really could have been — the kids could have been hit, or kidnapped. Anything can literally happen in 45 minutes or even 5 minutes for that matter.

However, is it child endangerment to leave an eight and nine-year-old alone for 45 minutes?

What are your thoughts on this? Is there an appropriate age for when kids can stay home alone on their own?

We’d love to hear your thoughts!
