A mother in Dekalb County is facing murder charges after police found her 1-year-old daughter dead in the back seat of her car.

A DeKalb County Police spokesperson said that 25-year-old Dijanelle Fowler called 911 from the Emory Physicians parking deck on June 15 at about 5:45 p.m.

When police arrived at the scene, 1-year-old Skylar Fowler was dead in the back seat. Dijanelle was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The woman was released later that night and left the state, according to DeKalb County Police.

Investigators then obtained warrants for her arrest and their fugitive unit was actively looking for her.

Fowler turned herself in on Monday night and now faces charges of second-degree murder, second-degree cruelty to children, and concealing a death.

Court documents say that Dijanelle Fowler was seen entering a hair salon for an appointment on that same day at 10 a.m., then leaving and getting into the car at 4 p.m. They indicated that video and witnesses say she never left the salon between those times.

The court documents also said that when she could not start the car, she obtained help from a male inside the salon to jump start the car. Dijanelle was believed to have covered the child or otherwise hid the child from the person jump-starting the car. The documents said, “There were a lot of clothes in the vehicle that may have been placed over the child.”

The person jumping the car was reportedly standing next to the car but said he did not see a child.
