Sony is set to release a new version of Cinderella in 2021, starring Camilla Cabello as the title character.

Now, Billy Porter has joined the project, playing a genderless version of the Fairy Godmother; the actor will be the first to ever gender-swap the character, which has featured in almost every adaptation of the fairy tale.

The Kinky Boots star gave an interview regarding his portrayal of the character to CBS.

He said: “It hit me when I was on the set last week how profound it is that I am playing the Fairy Godmother – they call it the Fab G,” he said.

“Magic has no gender. We are presenting this character as genderless – at least that’s how I’m playing it,”

“And it’s really powerful. It’s going to be a classic fairytale for a new generation; I think the new generation is really ready. The kids are ready. It’s the grownups that are slowing stuff down.”

As well as portraying the lead hero, Camilla Cabello will be contributing the music to the film, which is billed as a musical.

The film will be directed by Kay Cannon, who is best known for writing the Pitch Perfect franchise. She made her directorial debut with Blockers in 2018. Blockers was a female driven coming of age comedy that received generally positive positive reviews upon release and earned $94 million dollars on a $24 million dollar budget.

Cinderella is set to be tonally different to the 2015 Disney film of the same name, which starred Lily James as the titular hero and Helena Bonham Carter as the Fairy Godmother.

The film is set to be released February 5th 2021 by Sony Pictures Releasing.
