Are Kids Today Being Taught To ‘Mind their Ps and Qs’

Mom posts a rant on Facebook, about her kids not saying ‘thank you’ to her nor the young lady who served them ice cream. And well, it’s gone viral with over 350k likes and 34k comments.
It really raises the question if the kids of today are being taught their “Ps and Qs” by their parents, this phrase goes back to the mid-19th century, but in the 21st century have we forgotten this simple lesson in life?
The other question is, was this mom right to teach them a lesson in the way that she did or what would you have done?
Jaime Primak Sullivan then went onto posting this video on the reason why she posted what she did: (this video post alone has 4.5 Million views!)

I have 3 children. They’re not perfect angels but I do make sure they say “please” & “thank you”. It’s simply out of respect and if they don’t- I put them on the spot there and then. I’ve always told them that having good manners will get them far in life☆

Who’s fault is it if OUR children don’t have manners or can’t say a simple “please” or a simple “thank you”. I have thought my children 12/10/8/6 to be courteous, loving, polite, appreciative and thankful. It’s on us to remind them about their P’s and Q’s. This mother after throwing the ice cream away should have walked back in and apologize to the server for her not teaching the children to say thank you. It is not only on the children but on the adults guiding them.

I’m that mom. A firm correction the first time sets the lesson in stone.

Nope. Kids get distracted, they forget, etc. I always remind my daughter to say please and thank you. I think a more reasonable response would have been to talk to them and tell them she was disappointed and ask if they knew why. Then if none of the kiddos realized why, she could tel them, and reiterate the importance of manners. Either way, she then could have had them go back in and thank the server. I don’t think snatching their cones from them and throwing them away was necessary.

Its a parents own fault if their children don’t say thank you.

Mine is 4 and if i dont hear him say it I will ask him what hes forgetting. Usually he does. They are old enough to know better. When i was the age those kids are i used sir/Ma’am please and thank you. Thats how i was raised, with respect and manners. If i didn’t i was getting anything. I guess now this would be considered “old school parenting” by teaching manners.

I love how people blame the mum for the kids bad manners…. If she went to this extreme, I think she has a pretty good handle on it!

Courage?!?!? So now it is courageous to teach our kids manners & discipline them appropriately when they don’t use them??
My mom would have pulled her wooden spoon out of her purse & swatted me in the middle of the store!
As a mom of 2 girls ages 2 &3 my husband & I still model the correct behavior for our children & remind them to say “please, thank you, yes mam/sir, no man/sir”. As they get older we expect them to do this on their own. If not I would have done the same as this mom plus marched them back inside to apologize to the waitress.

And here I thought I was the “meanest” strictest mom (& grandmother) ever!
So glad to share that title with you! I am also very aware of being polite to servers and other working people.
Plus table manners I enforce all the time, so maybe I’m “meaner” ?? 🙂
Thank you so much for the post & this video!

What worked for me was that I started using the word please and thank you all the time with everyone. That worked in no time, my boys started imitating me right away.

I absolutely love everything she just talked about and totally agree with how how she handled the situation!! You rock meanest mom ever!! Keep teaching your children the way you are because that’s how you will end up with respectful adults!!
