How much can you trust appearances? I think we all realize that there’s more to most people than meets the eye.

Still, experts say that we evaluate others incredibly quickly. According to Business Insider, most people decide whether they like someone in about three seconds.

Researchers and social scientists have shown that we sort people according to their trustworthiness, personal status, intelligence, successfulness and dominance. But just because humans tend to judge others quickly doesn’t mean we should.

Consider a case out of Williston, Florida. According to Yahoo! Lifestyle, Officer Kenesha Carnegie of the Levy County Sheriff’s Office was driving by a gas station when she noticed a scene.

Three young men had gathered around an elderly couple, 100-year-old David Griest and 89-year-old Rose Griest, who had stopped at the gas station to use the bathroom while on the way home from a doctor’s appointment for Rose.

She was having a hard time getting into the car. And the young men — local rappers Joc Koe Stoe, Marty and Freddy G — decided to help her.

Carnegie said, “I look over and three men were assisting the couple. It was a beautiful thing to see.

“I know these men from the neighborhood, and I wanted them to have that moment to show who they really are.”

Carnegie asked if she could video them, and the footage makes my eyes begin to brim with tears.

It shows Rose stagger as she tried to make her way to the car’s passenger side. Indeed, she was so fatigued that she almost fell down.

But the trio of men was supporting her, keeping her from falling to the pavement. One of them held her walker while two grabbed her underneath her arms.

“Take it easy on her,” Carnegie said. And that’s exactly what the rappers did.

They gently pivoted her into the car, making sure she was safely inside. Once his wife was safely seated, David Griest (who was watching the whole thing) said, “I’m 100 years old.”

The video has been watched nearly 6 million times.

For their part, the young men seem to have acted simply because they saw a need.

“We didn’t even ask if they needed help,” Marty said. “We felt comfortable giving them a hand right away.

“I kept thinking, ‘She could have been my grandmother.’ One hundred years old is a beautiful life.”
