Mom Calls 911 As Dad Chokes Toddler. Dad Then Grabs Boy and Takes Off Running
In March 2016 police in Ohio received a call of a domestic violence incident after an argument between parents got physical.
Trevor Casey got into an argument with the mother of his toddler when he picked up their child and started to choke him. The boy’s little brother Kevin witnessed the incident and prompted his mother to call the police.
Casey, 21, took off with the toddler when he heard the police were coming and when officers caught him on the street he still had the toddler in his arms.
Lt. Joe Heffernan said, “You just never know what’s going through someone’s mind when they harm a small child like that.” Casey was arrested and charged with felonious assault.
Due to the abusive environment, they were subjected to; the children were taken and put into foster care. Their mother was pregnant at the time and when she gave birth the foster family picked up the new baby and reunited her with her two brothers.
All three children have remained together and have been living with the Marin family ever since, and this month their little family became permanent.
Heather Martin spoke to WTOL and said “Honestly at first we were like no way are we adopting three babies. And then we fell in love with them and we couldn’t see them going anywhere else.”
Bryan and Heather Martin were just finishing their foster care classes when the three children came into the care system and they feel blessed to have the siblings in their lives.
“This year has been really something to be thankful for. I got married to her this past February, my lovely wife, and today God has put another miracle, 3 miracles on me and I’m just beyond blessed and really it’s emotional because we’re a family. We’re officially a family,” Bryan said.
The Martins say they are committed to giving their kids all the love they deserve. They have given 4-year-old Kevin a new middle name, Xavier meaning savior after his saving his brother from his father. “He told his mom that his little brother was turning blue. So Kevin is our savior for our family, for his brother, he helped his brother,” Bryan said.
Judge Jack Puffenburger was moved by the heartwarming story that unfolded in his courtroom, a place he isn’t used to seeing happy endings emerge. “It’s just really heartwarming, really, to see. It’s the best part of being a judge, I can tell you that. The families are happy, but it’s just such a great day for the kids,” he said.
“These kids don’t realize today what a good day they’re having, but this is a life-changing day for them,” Judge Puffenburger added.
Bryan and Heather hope their happy ending might inspire others to open their homes and hearts to young children in need. They may even consider expanding their family one day with their own biological children.
What could have had a horrendous ending for the young children has turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
