Walmart Warns Customers About Recall After Listeria Scare
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration describes Listeria monocytogenes as “an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”
They add that, “Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
And that’s why they’re letting consumers know of a voluntary recall by the House of Thaller, which supplies hummus to Walmart and Giant Eagle supermarkets, according to WKBN.
The hummus that may have been contaminated by listeria is Fresh Food Market Artisan Hummus – Pine Nuts, Lantana White Bean Hummus with Pine Nut & Herb Topping, and Marketside Classic Hummus with Pine Nuts.
The Fresh Food Market hummus has “use by” dates ranging from June 23, 2017 to Aug. 17, 2017. The Lantana hummus has “use by” dates ranging from June 19, 2017 to Aug. 15, 2017. The Marketside hummus has “use by” dates ranging from June 29, 2017 to June 28, 2017. All of them also have lot codes that start with “W17.”
The pine nuts in the hummus is the focus of the recall. The possibly contaminated pine nuts were provided to the House of Thaller by HFV, Inc.
Listeria contamination was discovered in June in products sampled at a HFV, Inc. facility.
