Hair Color Appointment Almost Kills Pregnant Woman’s Baby
When 30-year-old Jess Strachan was 5 months pregnant, she didn’t think much of her hair appointment when she went to a family friend’s hair salon to get her hair dyed from blonde to brunette.
She had no idea that her face would swell up twice the size because of a reaction she suffered from the hair dye! Strachan was given antihistamines to reduce the swelling and was told by doctors that her baby could have died if her reaction had been internal, rather than external.
She told Britain’s Metro paper, “The whole experience was absolutely terrifying. My face had swollen so much that I looked like a monster, even my own husband couldn’t look at me as he was utterly devastated. The whole experience was absolutely terrifying. It was the worst moment of my entire life. I can’t believe I was so stupid to not have done a patch test.”
Three days after Jess dyed her hair, she went to her doctor who told her she was suffering from an allergic reaction to PPD (Paraphenylenediamine), which is a chemical commonly found in hair dyes. She was given antihistamines that were safe for pregnant women and, 72 hours later, she was able to open her eyes after the swelling subsided. The Doctor told her that if she had suffered an internal reaction, both she and her baby could have died.
A lot of research indicates the chemicals found in both semi-permanent and permanent dyes are not highly toxic and are safe to use during pregnancy.
The reason for this is that only small amounts of hair dye may be absorbed by the skin, leaving little that would be able to reach the fetus.
Hair treatments are generally considered safe to use during pregnancy. However, it may be worth considering getting highlights or using pure vegetable dyes instead.
Regardless of the research, it is best to wait at least until after the first trimester, if not until after pregnancy.
