Whilst serving time as a missionary in Haiti in 2014, Sarah Conque met a child by the name of Nika who changed her life completely!
Nika’s skull is bigger than normal due to a condition that caused fluid to build up in her brain. In Haiti if you are disabled you are considered to be cursed and will be ignored or treated badly, therefore her birth mother was ashamed of her and didn’t want anything to do with her.
Nika was malnourished and neglected when she first came into Sarah’s care but is doing so much better now.
When Nika was born she only had a 3% chance to survive so she has certainly defied the odds. She is now happy and doing well!
Since she’s been in the U.S, Nika underwent her second neurosurgery and had a VP shunt implanted. Nika has lost five pounds in fluid weight and her head circumference has decreased by almost 2 inches.
As the sole caregiver of Nika, Sarah cannot work and solely relies on donations to cover all Nika’s medical and living expenses.
To ensure that Nika can stay in the U.S., Sarah is now concentrating on fundraising to get the necessary help. Local healthcare professionals and hospitals are all getting involved to ensure that all of Nika’s medical needs are taken care of. Sarah and Nika also travel to Florida for follow up visits with her dietician, neurosurgeon and pediatrician.
Amazing!
Let’s hope that we continue to see improvements about Nika!
