A staggering 40 percent of human trafficking reported cases in the U.S. involved the sexual exploitation of a child, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics. Kids as young as 12 years-old are being trafficked for sexual exploitation.
What are the signs of a child who is being exploited?
- A child who often does household chores
- This child will rarely leave the house
- A child who is inappropriately dressed or looks malnourished
- Signs of physical or sexual abuse (bruises, scars, or cigarette burns)
- Appear to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs
- Often a tattoo with the word “Daddy” or the traffickers name
- Most cases this child is an orphan or living away from their family
- Living in below the usual standard of living conditions
- The child does not know the city or town they live in or if travelling does not know the destinations and/or flight details
- Will not be registered at a school or a medical center
- Does not have any identity documents
- These children are often seen in inappropriate places
- The child speaks very little and when they do gives a scripted story
What are the signs an adult is exploiting a child:
- Many visa applications
- Often travelling with different children
- Always remains in close proximity to the child and will speak for the child
- Living with unrelated children
- Claims they don’t know a child, who they were previously seen with
If you spot any of the signs above it is important to note that it does not necessarily mean a child is being trafficked. However should you suspect, do not confront the suspected trafficker, rather call emergency services.
