Parents Outraged With ‘Gay Sex Scene’ In Fireman Sam

The kid’s favourite fireman, Fireman Sam has caused outrage with some parents after a “sexually suggestive” scene between two male characters aired on Channel 5.

I put “sexually suggestive” in quotes because it was not, in fact, an actual gay scene, but some parents found the construction of the scene X-rated, so to speak. In fact, the scene which was supposed to be totally innocent simply showed one friend trying to help another out of a chair.

The seven-second clip has proved unintentionally funny as some people claim it looks like the character of Elvis Cringlinton was getting “rear-ended” by Station Master Steel. Cue some Twitter hysteria from people pointing out the sexual nature of the scene.

Adam Tranter was watching the show with his children when the scene in question came on, he tweeted “My kids were watching Fireman Sam and then this happened,” while amused mother Sam Allen responded to Adam’s tweet saying “I watched this episode with my son who was laughing his head off at him being stuck in a chair meanwhile I was laughing at what it looked like.”

Adam’s tweet has received a lot of responses from other users who mostly found the scene funny and most poked fun at the unintentional innuendo in a string of tweets. One user hilariously says “Laughing at out-of-context moments in children’s TV is literally in my top 10 reasons it was worth having a kid,” while another quipped “There are no words – I’ll never be able to watch Elvis & Station Officer Steel in the same light again.”

It is not the first time a children’s TV show has come under fire for suggestive content. If you remember the Tellytubbies you might remember the controversy Tinky Winky caused in America because he was carrying a handbag. Some claimed his character as promoting homosexuality and/or unconventional gender roles.

In fact, the original actor that played Tinky Winky, Dave Thompson left the show due to “creative differences” after the production company Ragdoll claimed they felt the actor was “misinterpreting” the role by implying the character was gay.

There has also been a massive buzz around Disney’s Frozen, and the possibility that Queen Elsa might be the first lesbian Disney Queen. Many fans have started a hashtag on Twitter asking Disney to “Give Elsa a Girlfriend”. People have interpreted the 2013 movie and Elsa’s story as a metaphor for coming out, which, let’s be honest is a huge step that many would welcome in the 21st Century.

Either way, poor old Fireman Sam is not the first show to create unintentional hysteria among fans, and it certainly won’t be the last either. Let’s remember that it’s almost 2018 and the world has evolved a lot in the last 20 years or so and that there is nothing wrong with same-sex relationships.

Alas, that is another can of worms with millions of differing opinions, so let’s not get into that now.
