Tragedy hit the small town of Delta, Ohio on Tuesday where a mother was shot and killed, and her 10-month-old son and his step-grandmother were abducted.
Police say the child’s father, 27-year-old James Ramey, murdered his ex-girlfriend then took off with their child, Winston, and the child’s step-grandmother, Deborah Mangas.
After issuing an Amber Alert, all three were found in Rochester, Indiana hours after the shooting was first reported by neighbors before dawn.
Delta Police say 23-year-old Amanda Mangus was shot inside her father’s home. She later died from her injuries. Her family said her last words were asking about Winston.
With tears in his eyes, Amanda’s father, Mike Mangus, said, “My only child’s dead,” adding that he told police to “catch him before I do.”
Indiana police arrested him without incident, and the infant and step-grandmother who were with him were not injured.
Police say the suspect kicked in the door at the home where Amanda, Deborah and the baby, Winston, lived about 5 a.m. Tuesday. They say Ramey then shot the mother of his son, and took the baby and Amanda’s stepmother.
Court records show that Amanda recently had requested a protection order against Ramey and police say she started dating someone else.
For several hours no one was able to reach Ramey during a manhunt. He was considered armed and dangerous.
According to court records found by affiliate WTVG, James C. Ramey has a current case in Fulton County Common Pleas Court with a charge of violating a temporary protection order. Arraignment for that charge was scheduled for March 23.
Now, Ramey faces extradition from Indiana to face multiple charges in Ohio. Police say they believe Mangus may have been headed to the Chicago area where he has family members.
Amanda Mangus was well known in Delta. She worked as a server at an area diner.
