In this ABC News article experts highlight some of the important signs that your child is at risk of hurting himself or others:
- Changes in behaviour
- Focuses on problems without rationalizing them away
Experts caution parents to trust their instincts if they feel there is something wrong with their child. Practice active listening and talk to them about your concerns, always reminding them that they are loved. Normal rules of privacy don’t apply and parents should have regular access to their child’s social media accounts, even going as far as asking them to show you some of the conversations they engage in.
Finally, if you feel that your child is depressed, involve other family members, teachers and community members – and treat depression just as you would any other physical ailment.
