The following are child-related recalls by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) for the month of May 2016.
- LaRose Industries’ Cra-Z-Jewelz Gem Creations: LaRose Industries has recalled 175,000 of its Cra-Z-Jewelz Gem Creations due to a violation of lead standard. The “Slider Bracelet” in the jewelry making kit contains high levels of lead, which is toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health issues. Consumers are advised to immediately take these recalled products away from children and contact LaRose for instructions to receive a full refund. Click here for more information.
- Chadwick bunk beds sold at Bob’s Discount Furniture: Hillsdale Furniture has recalled 20,000 children’s bunk beds sold exclusively at Bob’s Discount Furniture.The bunk bed’s side mattress support rails can crack or break, posing a fall hazard. So far, there have been 650 reports of bed support rails cracking or breaking. Several of these incidents resulted in the collapse of the upper or bottom bunk bed and some consumers fell from the bunk bed. Reports include eight injuries to children and adults that resulted in bruising, lacerations requiring stitches and one upper arm fracture. Consumers should immediately stop using the bunk beds and contact Hillsdale Furniture to arrange for the free installation of free replacement rails by Bob’s Discount Furniture. - Leisure Ways pink butterfly themed children’s camp chairs, moon chairs and swings: Far East Brokers has recalled 6,000 children’s chairs and swings due to a violation of federal lead paint standard. The screen-printing on the fabric of the chairs and swings contains excessive levels of lead, which is a violation of the federal lead paint standard. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled chairs and swings, take them away from children and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. No injuries have been reported. - Aero Spin and Aero Cruz Sky Rover remote-controlled Sky Rover toys: Auldey Toys has recalled 325,000 Sky Rover toys due to a fire hazard. The USB charging cords sold with the toy can overheat, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers. The firm has received 35 reports of charging cords overheating. No injuries have been reported. Consumers should immediately stop using the USB cords and contact the firm for instructions on obtaining a free replacement charge cord. Click here for more information.
- Tommee Tippee electric bottle and food warmers: Mayborn USA has recalled about 255,000 Tommee Tippee electric bottle and food warmers due to a fire hazard. The warmers can overheat and catch on fire, posing a fire hazard to consumers. The firm has received six reports of bottle and food warmers overheating, melting, smoking and catching on fire; which resulted in $16,000 in property damage. - Octopus rattles from The Land of Nod: The Land of Nod has recalled approximately 550 Octo-rattles because the fabric discs on the tentacles of the octopus rattles can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children. The firm has received five reports of the rattle’s fabric discs detaching. No injuries have been reported. Consumers should immediately take the recalled rattles away from children and contact The Land of Nod to receive a full refund. Click here for more information.
- Ikea Malm and other models of chests and dressers: Following an additional child fatality, IKEA has recalled 29 Million MALM and other models of chests and dressers due to a serious tip-over hazard. This includes about 8 million MALM chests and dressers and 21 million additional children’s and adult chests and dressers in the U.S. (An additional 6.6 million were sold in Canada.) The recalled chests and dressers are unstable if they are not properly anchored to the wall, posing a serious tip-over and entrapment hazard that can result in death or injuries to children. Consumers are advised to immediately stop using any recalled chest and dresser that is not properly anchored to the wall and place it into an area that children cannot access. - Saro Trading children’s nightgowns: Five styles of children’s nightgowns (roughly 7,800) have been recalled by Saro Trading due to a violation of federal flammability standard. The nightgowns fail to meet federal flammability standards for children’s sleepwear, posing a risk of burn injuries to children. No injuries have been reported.
