We all know someone who has been bullied, and if you have been bullied yourself, you know how hard it can be as a child to deal with it. It is a problem that affects every single family in some shape or form.

Around 1 in 3 or 4 American students are bullied at school according to StopBullying.gov. Every day we see another story about bullying emerging. It has always been an issue, however, now with social media and the likes it has become more common than ever, unfortunately.

There is no rhyme or reason as to why a particular person gets bullied, it can happen to anyone, but for anyone who is seen as ‘different’ it can be far worse.

Children who are bullied suffer from fear and anxiety and a lot of the time they are too afraid to tell anyone about it. A small percentage of children, 20 to 30 % to be exact, tell an adult about bullying. A lot of the time parents, in turn, don’t know what to do about it for fear of making their child’s situation worse.

However, Guardians of the Children are making a stand. They are a group of bikers from a motorcycle club with locations throughout the United States and Canada.

They have a goal, and according to their website http://www.guardiansofthechildren.com/ this is it; “The mission of Guardians Of the Children (GOC) is to recognize and react to child abuse and educate the public to do the same; to serve as advocates to provide strength and stability to families in crisis; and be an answer to the prayer of an abused child or teen for courage, support and protection.”

These guys have been known to escort bullied children to school so they feel safe and protected. They have now stepped up again for a 14-year-old Texas teenager who suffered at the hands of bullies earlier this year.

Christian Burk was the victim of a cruel attack in which another student cut off a chunk of her hair. The incident happened so fast Christian had barely registered what had happened to her.

Obviously, the incident left the girl shaken; she is refusing to let the bully control her. Dshannon Aday, Christian’s mother said “My daughter is a survivor. She’s not a victim. I won’t let her be a victim.”

After the incident members from the Guardians of the Children showed their support by escorting her to school. A number of Guardians walked Christian to the front door of her school. Todd Brisbon, a member of GOC spoke to WFAA and said: “Our goal here is to give strength and stability to these children that are going through this.”

Christian was humbled by the strangers’ act of kindness, “It makes me feel good,” she said in relation to her protectors’ act of kindness.

The GOC are doing a really great job in inspiring confidence into children who are affected by bullying by offering them the support they do, however, there is no definite way of stopping bullying. StopBullying.gov has said, “Many prevention programs have been tested in schools with modest results. Others have failed to make a difference. Researchers are still working on solutions to this complex problem.”

Yes, there may be no immediate solution to bullying as an issue, but support from friends, family and the community can be a massive boost to children going through it. GOC are a testament to this and the work they do. Bullying can cause children to become isolated because they feel alone in the world.

As someone who is familiar with being bullied, Christian has said that “People don’t deserve other people being mean to them. It’s rude.”

We all know the smallest act of kindness can go a very long way. So in the worlds of Ellen DeGeneres, “Be kind to one another.”
