You do not stop children from harming themselves by telling them to run away from guns and not touch it. The video bluntly shows that childrens’ curiosity will get the best of them. We have a 6 year old in our home. We take him to the gun range and he is taught day in day out about gun safety. “Treat it as if it is always loaded, NEVER put your finger on the trigger until you’re ready to shoot, and to always keep it on safety.” There are many other boundaries we speak about in our home when it comes to firearms and we are all very comfortable with how we store and treat them. I guess that’s the spirit of living in Texas though. We feel that it is not better to tell them to stay away from them, but rather to educate them about them. Even with play guns, he is taught to follow all of the rules. It is a way of life and it is our form of prevention.

I am a parent of two boys 6 and 8 and my daughter is 4.In my honest opinion watching this it occured to me know matter how much knowledge you continue to use to teach kids gun safety will not set in. Maybe let them actually get curuosity out and allow them to examine an obviously un loaded gun. Teach them gun safety, as well as learn what to do if there is a gun. For you to get a child to understand such trauma guns can cause they either have had to endure a traumatic event with a gun or they are very mature. Since these are not ideas we can harp on for them to understand, try something different. Run a gun safety class for children. After a child is aware of proper handling and safety individually take a child to a shooting range. To get them to understand the seriousness of what a gun is capable of have them take an important toy and have them shoot it. The feeling of losing a stuffed friend they had fodness from will be in a minute way of similarity of losing a loved one. If they are ever in a situation with a gun, that destroyed wooby will come to mind and they will most likely act maturly and do the correct thing.

That was one example, there are two more. The second is take them to a place to show them what happens to someone that touch a gun and look to see if it is loaded. The third is not listening to what was told to them, about don’t touch the gun, go tell someone.
