If you’re a Nissan owner, your vehicle could be included in a massive safety recall.
Close to 4 million Nissan cars have been recalled as a result of serious issues with passenger air bags or seat belts that could potentially fail in a crash. Such a safety failure could lead to serious injuries and even fatalities.
Nissan North America, Inc. says 3.2 million cars could have a faulty sensor that detects if the front passenger seat is occupied and if the passenger is an adult or a child. These defective sensors could think an adult is a child or think the seat is empty — incorrectly turning off the air bag.
Certain cars of the following models are affected:
- 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima
- 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF and Sentra
- 2013-2017 Nissan Pathfinder
- 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60 and Q50
- 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue
- 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Chevrolet City Express
- 2013 Infiniti JX35.
Nissan says it will notify owners of the problem and offer to fix it for free. However, there isn’t yet a schedule provided for when the notices will be sent out or how soon the repairs can be made.
Additionally, Nissan is recalling 620,000 2013-2016 Sentras. For this recall, the air bag sensor isn’t shutting off the air bag when it should be. The front passenger seat belt bracket could become deformed if it’s used to secure a child restraint system. This could then cause the air bag to stay on when it should be off.
A fix for this issue hasn’t been determined yet by Nissan. In the meantime, Nissan warns owners to avoid installing child restraint systems in the front seats. After owners receive an initial recall notification, a second notification will be sent once a solution is determined.
