Mom Watches Son Being Paddled By Principal

All parents dread the day that their child gets called into the principal’s office for behavioural issues but for a Georgia family, a minor incident which would usually be handled civilly, ended up becoming a nightmare after a cruel principal insisted on paddling a frightened little five-year-old boy as punishment for a minor behavioural issue.

The boy had apparently spit on a fellow student and the school reckoned the act was offensive enough to merit hitting a child with a paddle!

To make matters worse, the mother was present, but felt powerless to stop the abuse. Pretending to be texting whilst this was taking place, she was in fact recording the entire ordeal.

Shana Marie Perez, the mother of the little boy, posted the distressing video on Facebook that shows her son desperately crying and pleading with the school Principal not to hit him.

Two weeks prior to the incident Perez was apparently arrested for truancy after her son missed eighteen days of school for doctor’s appointments.  Perez was released, but says the principal threatened her with more time in jail if she didn’t allow her son to be “disciplined”. On her Facebook page she stated “They told me if he could not get a paddling he would have to be suspended and if he got suspended for even one day I WILL go to jail for truancy”.

The video posted on Perez’s Facebook timeline has since been shared over sixty thousand times whilst the Jasper County Primary school has received a number of posts on its Facebook wall  by parents. Some in utter disgrace but some surprisingly supportive messages!

Following the video being posted, the Jasper County School District put out a statement which said it “is aware of the video released by Ms. Perez. Unfortunately, the district is barred by state and federal law from commenting about the specifics of this incident. The district respects every student’s right to privacy.”

Corporal punishment is allowed in Georgia, but only with parental consent.

Well her reasoning cause their policy is he would have been suspended if be didn’t get paddled (this policy is known at their school) he’s already missed 18 days so she would have gone to jail for his missing so many days. Why is this 5 year old missing so much school that your even at the point?

I would have walked out with my kid, too! No way would I let them pin him down to spank him. He’s probably in kindergarten and, as far as in Texas where I am, kids don’t even have to go to kindergarten.

I got hacked twice, but that was when i was in the 7th grade. A principal hacked a 5 YEAR OLD!? This is outrageous. I can’t imagine being that mom and allowing someone to hack my 5 year old right in front of me. Before that paddle could even touch my child-I would’ve knocked that woman out! I got bail $ saved so i’m not even worried about jail.

I’d be furious I would not allow that poor baby was crying for help and his mother just stood there. That’s abuse he will learn to not trust anyone close to him. She deserves to go to jail. I feel so bad for that baby boy! The people doing the paddling should also go to jail. People in this world are so messed up

Kids should be paddled for bad behavior; however, in this situation, the mother should have been paddled. Days missed is not a five year old’s fault. There’s a difference between abuse and discipline, but these days everyone screams child abuse/cps and that’s why kids these days are out of hand and running the house.

    • Shannon Leigh Johnson

      April 20, 2016 at 2:37 am

I’m sure it’s not the whole story. I’m commenting, in general, to everyone screaming child abuse about spanking. In the situation of this little boy, I wouldn’t call abuse about what was going on but I don’t agree with it either. However, some spankings are warranted.

    • Helen Gournias

      April 20, 2016 at 12:00 pm

Agreed I don’t know the whole story either but in what school does the principal have any right to paddle a child.
Days Missed not the fault of the child but the fault of the parent.
I as a parent would never allow any principal to paddle my child.

I don’t believe in spanking a kid for every little infraction. I believe some times spankings should be done; however, looking at crime rates between Canada and USA .. Maybe the US should adopt more Canadian policies, seeing as Canada has less crime rates. Kids these days are getting quite out of control and something does need to be done.. What though is the question.

A swat isn’t abuse. I don’t like the idea of a huge paddle. One swat with your hand, within reason, isn’t abuse. I rarely swat my daughter, because I talk things out with her, a lot; however, to call a swat abuse is ridiculous. If the swat turns into an all out brawl with a small child then ya, or if the swat is done out of anger, then ya. The last swat I gave my daughter was at the beginning of the school year when she thought it was perfectly fine to completely disregard her teacher and tell her ‘no’ and climb all over the desk and under and not listen at all. One swat, and a good talking to about how unacceptable that was, and how that might make her teacher feel, and what school is all about. Since that one swat, she has been a perfect student and helping the teacher out.

I agree theres way more to this story thans being said ,kid probably has repeatedly been disrupted and had behaviour problems. Need more paddling inthe schools and at home . Wed have better behaved children and young adults

      • tanya

        July 7, 2016 at 10:50 pm

Tanya Louth – If you did something wrong at work & your boss hit you would you be better behaved after that? Or maybe if you were speeding & the cop who pulled you over spanked you on the side of the road.. Would that make you drive safer or just humiliate you?

People are not for hitting & kids are people too. If you’re a good enough parent you can figure out how to convince your kid to do the right thing without hitting.

Not saying this was right by no means but I remember getting paddled at 5. Of course we just took it and didn’t act up again. I also got paddle again at 6 the following year for misbehaving all day. What I see wrong with this is the little boy screaming for his mother and two others trying to discipline him. Why couldn’t they have the mom do it? Or not do it at this time. Nothing was accomplished other than the poor child being scared to death. Why would the mom go along with this?! I just don’t understand?

We had a card system. Green card, yellow, red and then black. Once you got to black you got a paddling. Very seldom someone got black and when they did they never got it again. Times have changed and I’m not saying it’s right to paddle or not but this child was very scared and they should not have done that.

Can’t watch this video because I value my sanity. But I know I’d be on death row for sure if someone even commented that they “might” or want to strike my child. It would never even get to the point of them actually doing it. Take me to jail. I would go gladly to jail protecting my child. And when the judge asks me to tell them what I did, I’d sing it, not just talk. I would be proud and tell them don’t even worry about early parole because I’m likely to commit the same crime again if my child was ever in danger again. F’n heifer. She has no right to call herself a mother to stand there letting someone else strike her child. I don’t play that $#÷+

I agree he could’ve gotten it at home. But corporal punishment still exists in GA. Most schools don’t do it. But some small towns still do, Jasper is a small town. The kid spit on someone. When I was spit on in middle school, my parents pressed charges. The other kids parents coulda done the same. If y’all read the whole story you’ll see what’s up. Some kids need paddling, and hope no one is gonna try and tell me that at 5 they don’t know any better, bull hockey, I’m a preschool teacher. They know better by the age of 3 or 4 to not spit on someone. Unless they weren’t raised right.

    • Melissa Owens

      April 21, 2016 at 2:37 am

Only sometimes little kids naturally spit while talking. Was that the case? I have had kids all upset because another child spit on them but saw it myself and the kid was just talking and spit accidentally. They are little. Yes, they may know better but a 5 year old is impulsive. They are learning to control those impulses and behavior. It is not an offense to be paddled for! Adults with common sense are needed here and sadly, none were found in this situation.

    • Britnie SHortie Holton

      April 21, 2016 at 3:07 am

The report I read stated the child spit on another child. Yes there are other ways to punish. But in backwoods small towns like Jasper they do what they want. It did not say whether this was a first offense either.

    • tanya

      July 7, 2016 at 10:58 pm

Britnie I agree kids should know better not to spit by age 5. I don’t know the history of what went on before. However, physical punishment doesn’t work. If it did, then any kid would only ever need to be hit once. Physical punishment causes long term harm in trade for short term compliance. If you are a preschool teacher I’d think it was your responsibility to be aware of the latest research on the effects of physical punishment.

What’s worse then the paddling and the emotional distress that the kid went through is that parents can go to jail for truancy!!!!!!! How crazy is that? I’ve never heard about being locked up before because of that. That is a crazy law. Schools need to help families dealing with problems not beat the kids and jail the parents!

Just cruel but then I supposed he needs to get used to the violence around him…he might be getting body slammed by an officer in high school or shot by a police officer or some other random person with a gun. So glad this kind of thing doesn’t happen in our schools.

If a child should need dicipline, especially at age five, the mother should be the one to come up with the punishment to fit what the child did wrong! NOT THE PRINCIPAL! And a mother should NOT be threatened with jail if she does not go along with what the principal deems appropriate! I feel the Principal and the teacher should be sued for laying a wooden paddle on a little boy! If it were me, I would tell the Principal that she would have to come through me before she got at my son! I feel very strongly about this, as dicipline does NOT mean brutality!

I am not sure I understand your comment! The child was in trouble for spitting at someone, not that the mother missed taking the child to school! I understand that if she kept the child home, she could of been thrown in jail! There are all kinds of ways to dicipline a child, not just finding the easiest way, by paddling!

  31. Barbara J. Spencer

How can you teach a child not hit others at age five, then turn around and use a paddle for their misbehavior? Yes the child did spit at another child, and if the parent does use this form of dicipline at home, then let the parent do the spanking, not the Principal! I know here in Canada this Principal would be getting a call from The Children’s Aid Society, and could land up getting sued! In this case, I would agree with The Children’s Aid Society! I would never allow anyone to paddle my five year old son! I would see that Principal and teacher in Court first!

Sounds to me like this mother needs to leave not only that school, but that school district! Maybe even leave Georgia! Sounds like Georgia schools have some fucked up laws and they are not helping students, only hurting them…not only physically, but emotionally and mentally as well!

  44. Mary

    April 23, 2016 at 8:15 pm

This is outrageous. You are a POS parent for sitting by and allowing this to happen. I did my research and according to Georgia state law, corporal punishment is allowed only with the consent of the parents. So this piece of garbage mom gave these piece of garbage teacher/principals permission to paddle her son. How can you sit there and watch and make the comments this mom did as they try to paddle her son. Especially with him crying begging for moments help. I’m outraged by this. None of these three woman should be allowed to be near or have children. Kids are supposed to be able to trust and depend on teachers and especially parents. This whole situation is absolutely appalling. This mother should have her child taken away and the two educators should lose their jobs. Children are innocent. Spitting on another kid does not wast rant a beating. Nothing does. Hitting a child is NEVER ok.

I live in GA and have my child’s entire life. Never once has she been paddled, and she’s going to high school next year. It seems this principal and/or mother are a problem. Truancy is something that only happens to people who don’t get their kid to school. Dr appts do not count since they are excused and you can even get “note” proving the Dr visit. A child being suspended doesn’t count as truancy either.

  47. TaraSinclair

This is disturbing!!! What in mankind does any child deserves this? This is school kids should be happy to learn and be there. They have BANNED this century’s ago so there is no need for it. Talk to them listen to what they r saying, be a safe place for them not paddle them. The principal should loose her job but before she leaves paddle her bottom see how she likes it. The mother all I have to say grow some balls and a back bone he is ur son flesh and blood take him out of that school don’t put up with it. Grow up and do something about it NOW NOT LATER..

Wish more were paddled. It might save a few kids from visiting me at my job as a corrections officer. If you don’t want your kids paddled at school then start early at home teaching the child respect for authority and respect for others. And after seeing some of these responses its obvious some parents failed to spank others as children for their filthy mouths.. And we wonder where the kids get it ? Hhmm. Spare the rod, spoil the child.

I have read this mother’s FB. I have seen things she has posted. She has laughed as she took photos of her son flipping the bird and being absolutely disrespectful. Do I believe that what happened in the principal’s office was right? No. I think these women were enjoying tormenting this child with the thought of being paddled. But if the mother had wanted to take him out of there, she could have and should have. Period. I feel like her “reasons” for not doing it are a bit absurd.
